Il più vasto campo d’aviazione della Sardegna in guerra
1940 – 1944

Il titolo riprende una frase del corrispondente di guerra Mirko Giobbe che, su questo aeroporto scrisse un articolo su “Le vie dell’aria” del 18 ottobre 1942:
“E’ un campo che ha le dimensioni dell’orizzonte, tanto sembra vasto e spazioso.”
In effetti il campo d’aviazione di Villacidro (Trunconi) per superficie impegnata era il più vasto della Sardegna. Da questa base, e da quella non molto distante di Decimomannu, partivano i ricognitori e i bombardieri che cercavano di bloccare i rifornimenti che la Home Fleet inglese, si sforzava di portare da Gibilterra a Malta.
Dopo i successi iniziali la nostra aviazione non fu più in grado di contrastare le preponderanti forze anglo-americane. Agli inizi del 1943 il campo fu ceduto alla Luftwaffe Tedesca che fu costretta al abbandonarlo alcuni giorni dopo l’8 settembre. A novembre arrivarono gli americani e, agli inizi del 1944, anche i Francesi della Francia Libera. In Sardegna (Decimomannu e Villacidro) erano stanziati tutti i bombardieri medi B-26 Marauder e da qui partivano tutte le missioni con le quali i Marauder Americani e Francesi martellavano i ponti ferroviari e stradali dell’Italia peninsulare per tagliare i rifornimenti alle truppe tedesche che opponevano una strenua resistenza all’avanzata delle armate anglo-americane.
Infine non va dimenticato che lo Sbarco in Provenza (Operazione Dragoon) fu preparato e supportato dalle missioni che partivano da Villacidro e Decimomannu.
Il libro non solo riporta la storia dell’aeroporto ma si occupa anche dell’aspetto umano ossia della vita che questi aviatori (Italiani e Tedeschi prima, Americani e Francesi poi) conducevano a pochi chilometri dall’abitato. Fisicamente così vicini ma nel contempo così distanti: “…ma noi vivevamo, loro e noi, in due mondi separati da secoli. Essi si trascinavano in un’esistenza vegetativa, al margine degli avvenimenti che appena li sfioravano… Lì c’erano stati i Tedeschi…Rimpiazzati dagli Americani e dai Francesi, che importa anche questi stranieri partiranno a loro volta…” (Geogre Courtin, su Les Marauders Français)

Ignazio Fanni è nato a Villacidro nel 1943. Laureato in farmacia, sin dai tempi del Liceo ha nutrito un vivo interesse per la storia. Dopo alcune esperienze di studio e di lavoro all’estero, dal 1988 è titolare di una delle farmacie di Villacidro. Nei locali della sua farmacia ha allestito il Farmamuseo “Sa Potecarìa”, una raccolta di arredi, di utensili e strumenti attinenti “l’arte” sanitaria in generale e quella farmaceutica in particolare.
Questo libro è frutto di una ricerca durata quasi cinque anni, di documenti e testimonianze negli archivi militari italiani, tedeschi, inglesi, americani e francesi.
L’autore è riuscito a mettersi in contatto con diversi aviatori che, durante il secondo conflitto mondiale, hanno trascorso un periodo più o meno lungo a Villacidro. Alcuni, molto gentilmente, hanno inviato foto, diari o rilasciato testimonianze che hanno contribuito alla realizzazione del libro.

The book not only filler the history of the airport but is taken care also of the human aspect that is of the life that these air (Italian and Germans before, Americans and French then) lead to little kilometers from the lived one. Ignazio Fanni is been born to Villacidro in 1943. Graduated in pharmacy, sin from the times of the Grammar school it has nourished an alive interest for the history. After some experiences of study and job to the foreign country, from 1988 he is titular of one of the pharmacies of Villacidro. In the premises of its pharmacy it has prepared the Farmamuseo "Knows Potecarìa", a collection of furnishings, relating tools and instruments "the sanitary art" in a generalized manner and that pharmaceutics in particular. This book is fruit of a search duration nearly five years, of documents and testimonies in arch military Italians, Germans, English, Americans and French to you. The author is successful to put itself in contact with various air that, during according to world-wide conflict, has passed a more or less long period to Villacidro. Some, a lot kindly, have sended photo, per diem or rilasciato testimonies that have contributed to the realization of the book.
